There are so many points to be made regarding this story - the most important being how tragic this is for the victims of these horrible crimes.
But one point should also be made about how we view college football in this culture. Has college football and all its money become so important that the health and welfare of little children is pushed aside?
That's also a big part of this story. The idea that: Hey, we are a national power in college football; we can't have this get out. We have to keep this quiet.
This mindset speaks volumes and maybe we need to step back and re-evaluate college athletics (football).
You sir are correct on all counts.
The county got hosed but good (and so did the city for that matter).
Congel continues to sell snake oil.
The PS choice of picture for the front page was no accident either.
Notice the wedding band on the superintendent's finger?
The sad fact of the matter is that running for office takes money - a lot of money.
We no longer will see someone with good intentions and good ideas run for public office.
So Senator DeFrancisco wouldn't be able to text while he's driving the Crown Victoria he's entitled to as one of the senate leaders?
He'll just have to hire a driver - on the taxpayer's dime also I'm sure.
I only wish I had more time to respond to you Hawk.
Let me simply say, "Well done."
Chose DeFrancisco because unfortunately he's my State Senator.
I did not mean to imply that DeFran. is the only one. There is no question the problem is systemic.
However, if you listen to the senator or read his responses, he tries to come off as a champion of reform. Nothing could be further from the truth.
As I read through the first several paragraphs of the article I immediately thought to myself, "This has DeFrancisco written all over it."
Low and behold mid-way through the piece there is his name.
Simply put: John DeFrancisco has been part of the problem and remains part of the problem.
I wonder what political coup he's planning for this summer.
Thanks P-S for the investigative piece.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., is drafting a bill supported by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg that would prohibit people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of the president, members of Congress or federal judges.
What the hell - Hey Peter would you mind terribly if you add me to the "1,000 feet" list. I don't want anyone with a gun near me either.
Good win. Very good win.
Notre Dame is well coached and poses problems for SU's zone.
I certainly underestimated this team (even though I know there is a lot more season left).
A couple of things: What team in the country is even close to what the Orange can do in transition. I watch a lot of college basketball, and this SU team is without question head and shoulders ahead of anyone else in terms of getting out and running.
Additionally, this team has some options off the bench. One player has changed a lot of what we could expect over the next four or five weeks - James Southerland. With his outstanding play of late, Coach Boeheim has moved Ricky to the middle of the zone. Rick will see more and more time in the middle of the zone despite the coach's intentions of having him at the power forward spot.
Lastly, if this team continues to take care of the ball and shoot the ball reasonably well, they can be very special come late February, through March.
P.S. Joseph and Jardine are playing with A LOT of confidence. It serves them well.
The real irony is that David Patterson never, ever wanted to be governor. The only reason why he agreed to be on the Spitzer ticket as Lt. Governor was to get the job he really wanted - U.S. Senator.
The scenario was rather simple: New York Senator Hillary Clinton, would become the Democratic nominee, win the presidency and then Governor Spitzer would appoint David Patterson.
The best laid plans.
Gov. Patterson never really, totally committed to being the kind of governor he wished he could be. He seemed to be torn between doing what he thought was best, and the reality that that might make him unpopular.
Tina,
We, the very proud parents of the North Syracuse All Stars have really enjoyed your take on the boys' success over this past summer. You are obviously a concerned citizen, whose interest is appreciated but unwarranted.
The kids have experienced more on this trip than they could have ever had at Camp Tina's.
Mostly they have enjoyed true southern hospitality and the comraderie that comes from playing sports - a comraderie that you have almost certainly missed throughtout your ideal life.
Seriously, we're just hanging out about to drink another beer in your honor (in a dry county - on a Sunday).
Signed,
Parents looking for any spare cans and bottles
Glad to see the P-S doing some important investigative work.
The paper needs to continue more of this. They ultimately represent us and our interests.
Thanks for the work. It's important.
How many tickets? Wow. That's what I call fighting crime.
Seems to me he is supporting the troops by supporting their coming home to their families.
History has taught us many things. At the top of that list is the fact that nation building (especially in this part of the world) has not and will never work.
Buerkle is a hack.
Too bad the Republicans could not have put up someone with more ability.
Just because Sen. Parker is crazy, doesn't necessarily mean he's wrong.
DeFrancisco is a huge symptom of the problems that have stifled New York State.
Even more upsetting is the fact that he will run virtually unopposed this November.
Sen. DeFrancisco's comments are most telling. And who pays the price for his arrogance and ineffectiveness...?
I was never a proponent of term limits until several years ago. I used to believe that the voters had the chance to limit terms at the ballot box.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
How said it is that DeFrancisco can make these kinds of comments.
But then again, he is able to because he's running unopposed AGAIN.
What a crying shame.
"No one in this country has ever been denied medical care".
You've got to be kidding me. This may go down as one of the most ludicrous things ever written on this forum.
Our rights "are given by God"? Really.
What this bill does is help senior citizens. This bill helps young, recent college grads stay on their parents' plan. This bill helps small business owners.
This bill also exposes trustnotone's ignorance.
Simply: You are correct.
Teachers are being scapegoated here. There's just no quesition about it. (I'm not a teacher).
So much anger and hatred over a piece of legislation that will HELP people.
More than 30 million people will be able to find affordable health care.
Why is it that so many people are outraged by this. Members of Congress have great health care and so many are outraged because we want to give citizens similar care?
If anything the reforms don't go far enough.
As stated in an earlier post: many of us (maybe all of us) are one week away from losing our jobs and our health benefits.
You'd change your tune then.
How ironic that this story appears just below the one that reports Excellus Board members vote for a raise.
Here's a Board member who does this work for no money and obviously put her heart and soul into that work.
No one calls out this insurance industry; just those involved in education.
biggflavor, you beat me to the punch. I'd like to laugh at the irony of it all if it weren't so flippin' sad.
Another point if I may: So much venom aimed at teachers. So much animosity toward education. Why haven't we heard a public call to reduce DOT snow plow drivers? Or Thruway toll takers? Or State Police? All of whom make a lot more than teachers.
It's interesting how teachers continue to face this kind of derision.
Don't be naive and think that this vote was a referendum on health care. It was not.
Like many elections nowadays it was an election based on popularity. Brown is far more likeable and his campaign was far better executed.
Ms. Coakley? Her campaign was arrogant and condescending and even liberal voting Massachussets folks aren't going to tolerate that. She presented a sense that she was entitled to the seat.
Elections today are not based on issues. They're based on who's the most popular kid in the class.
The one (of many) play last night that I think might be emblematic of this group is an assist that Jardine had late in the game.
He had an wide open layup but instead gave it for a loud dunk.
I look at that and am impressed with the unselfishness. It might look like a small thing, but he's not worried about padding his own stats.
I love SU basketball and no one is more critical of their play over the years. With that said, this team may have some special things ahead of them.
Wow. That was a pretty impressive win. You have to like the fact that Syracuse responded several times to Florida runs with big plays. Certainly Rautins' "3" to take back the lead is the best example.
Generally speaking, this team is looking more and more impressive. Think about the kind of defense they're able to play and the transition game that is the result.
Also, teams usually score three different ways: perimeter shooting, inside the paint or in transition. Good teams are proficient in one of those areas; okay maybe two. Great teams - Final Four teams are proficient in all three areas.
Syracuse has shown they can score the ball anywhere on the court - one caveat: I'm still concerned about bad free throw shooting. It will cost them in a big spot this year. Hopefully not in March.
Wait and stop the presses. The Syracuse Newspapers felt that this was a story? Come on.
A self-serving, ego-driven narcissist applies for a job and it's reported in the news.
How do you run this story - especially considering you didn't have any comment from the AD.
Every time someone applies or interviews for a job it's a news story.
You wonder why the Post Standard (and other newspapers) is struggling...Exhibit Q.
Good point made earlier regarding Lawrence Moten. His jersey has not been retired.
He graduated as the all-time scorer in Big East history!
I like the Duke criteria: must have earned a degree from the university.
Melo was a great player the year he was here. But he was only here one year.
Number 15 should not hang. But then again a 3 million donation to the university buys a lot of stuff.
This paper has sunk to a new low.
What journalistic criteria have they used which suggests that this is a news story.
THIS IS NOT NEWSWORTHY!
I BEG YOU TO GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER AND START BEING A NEWSPAPER AGAIN!
I urge all of you to PLEASE remember this a year from this November.
I'm a card-carrying liberal Democrat, but damned if I'll vote for an incumbent no matter what political affiliation.
These guys are an absolute disgrace - both Republicans and Democrats.
Defrancisco...done. Valesky...gone. All of them...out!
When ego and narcissism get in the way of doing the people's work, it is time for new leadership in the District Attorney's office.
There have been calls for Jim Boeheim's job (a debate which should be had), but there also needs to be a call for Mr. Fitzpatrick to step down.
His actions have been simply irresponsible and self-serving.
