Preface: I am certainly not suggesting that this bridge isn't a problem.
BUT... I will never understand how these accidents happen - there's strobe lights, multiple bright yellow signs, and the edge of the bridge itself is the brightest orange paint that exists. Perhaps there's a driver information problem? Are they unaware of the height of their vehicles, thinking that the height limit doesn't apply to them?
If we continue to use the Parkway as a commuter road, it also desperately needs guardrails on the lake side (which goes directly against it's scenic purpose) - but anyone who thinks that a driver isn't going to end up in the lake one of these days is extremely naive.
I think this is part of a greater problem that is plaguing our area - massive housing developments are springing up in the suburbs bringing more people into a condensed area, but the infrastructure isn't expanding with it (has anyone tried to drive in the vicinity of Routes 11 & 31 in Cicero lately? its infuriating to try to get anywhere)
Short of raising (or lowering to ground level) the railroad bridge, I don't know the solution to the Parkway issue - but agree that something must be done - quickly.
