Sometimes a feel-good story isn't so bad. We have so much crime and politics. But if there are some current events you're interested in, let us know.

That should be fleeing. We fixed it.

Zoomie, that's a pretty good explanation of how we try to do things.

The indictment was returned to the court today, which is what the court goes by as the date.

Fixed it. Thanks.

Yes, the judge dismissed the lawsuit, although the accusers say they will appeal. The Post-Standard had the story before Newsday did:

That squares with yesterday's story that there was an altercation in front of the Rite Aid, after three or four guys walked up or drove up to the victim and attacked him.

The dateline says Elbridge because the information came from the state police office in Elbridge.

It should be "fiscal."

That was a glitch, but we fixed it.

That was the Salvation Army.

Thanks for the excellent description. It matches up well with the various reports we've been getting.

jammerj, quite a few of your comments are up, and a few were taken down -- only one recently as far as I can tell. I hope you stick with it.

Yes, the photos came in later. And Preble Road does go under I-81 at the bridge there. The northbound lanes of I-81 remain closed at this time.

It comes with his job. Just keep it clean.

The best way to keep comments from getting taken down is to avoid personal attacks.

We like students reading the news.

And all the reports are the injuries were not life threatening.

We added the race for you, since we do try to be consistent. Normally, I'd say, "What about the photo?" But this photo doesn't help all that much on that issue.

You might be right. I think it made it there because Cayuga County and Seneca County are neighbors.

Got it thanks.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, since the story says Seneca County. It might have been changed later, but it doesn't seem to have been. Were you looking at something besides the story itself?

Yes, it closed at the end of March.

I once sold a Johnny Bench rookie card for $30. But when I was a kid, you had to buy them one pack at a time from the corner market. Later you could buy whole boxes at a time. I think baseball cards lost some of their charm when it became too easy. But I mutilated my cards playing with them, since I was just a kid, not a speculator.

VLM: Keep it clean and your comments won't be taken down.

What I mean is that if all we have is that the suspect was black, or that the suspect was Italian-looking, then it's no help at all. If we have that plus height and weight, clothing, facial features, etc., then it's slightly helpful. And at least it won't lead to "round up all the Italian-looking guys" in town.

Let's keep going with this and maybe we'll eventually work it out. I'll disregard the "moran" part. I think you're raising the point I'm trying to get to when you mention a blonde Italian. That's similar to what I mean by race not being physical. When the description says that someone is black, what does that mean? Light, dark or in between? Lately the term "white Hispanic" is in the news. If all we have is that someone is black, or Hispanic, we really don't know what they look like. That's we try to only use race if it comes with more details. Even then, it's only slightly useful.

Yes, let's address this again. We aren't always as consistent as we want to be, but here's what we try to do: If the only description is the race, or we have a very limited description, we generally don't include the race. It's easy to be mistaken and it isn't going to help. It isn't even a physical description, if you think about it -- is it light, dark, in between? It can be kind of silly, as in "I saw a white guy, call the police!" "Or round up all the black guys; it's got to be one ot them!"

But the more other details we have, the more likely we are to include the race. That's when it might actually help, slightly. Still, it's easy to overestimate how much help a limited description will be to you in finding the perpetrator.

No problem. I'm just trying to help.

I'll answer this one just to deal with it in one spot. Commenters can take any side they want. (Sometimes it takes a civil tongue to speak the harshest truths.)

To keep from getting a comment taken down, just avoid personal attacks and name-calling. I know it's hard sometimes, but speak your piece and leave the other commenters out of it.

And if you see someone else getting away with something, well, that happens. But it's like a basketball game. If you fouled and the ref called it, you fouled. You can't point to someone else and say, "But he did it..."

So all I'm trying to do here is help you keep your comments from getting taken down. I always hate to see an otherwise intelligent comment get sunk by a personal attack or name-calling.

Feel free to speak your mind in the comments, but no personal attacks or name-calling.

Come to think of it, it's good advice for schoolkids, too.
