How is the"spirit" of the First Amendment (guarantee of many basic individual liberties) compromised when someone exercises their right not to give a comment?

I like the general idea behind this column but I don't like the parallel drawn with the First Amendment. Government is a publicly owned and operated entity. There should be no secrets. If someone refuses to talk then find who is ultimately accountable and call them out in the press. This was done with OCC situation and the county leg put some feet to the fire.

$2,000 BAIL!?!?!?!! Didn't DeMarche just throw his name in for a County Court seat? Can't understand how he didn't get the nod.....

Awesome story. We hear far too much on the reluctance of people in the community cooperating with law enforcement.

Anyone notice this was at the "Community Center" at 5 in the afternoon? So sad

A Kirsten Gillibrand story and no accompanying photo? For shame...

Agreed. Jamesville beach is a nightmare for traffic for Balloon Fest. I'm assuming it will be worse for this.

I don't know why this isn't downtown. Use the Inner Harbor and use the "overflow" lots by Carousel for parking.

Hey, here's a priority for Joanie.

She ran her first election on inclusion, togetherness and bridging the gaps in our political community. Her first term reflected anything BUT that. If anything the gaps are wider and the bitterness simmers just below the surface. Joanie never reached out to the Republican establishment to put the nastiness of the primary behind them. Instead, she has acted like a jilted ex-girlfriend. Joanie went out of her way in the last leg election to line up candidates to run against incumbents that didn't see eye-to-eye with her. Her highly touted right-hand man, Ben Dublin, is now under investigation for election law fraud. Defiant to the end, Joanie has blamed the DA for making this a public embarrassment (when he was forced to explain why a special prosecutor was needed) and has blamed Dadey who I thought was her pick to replace the last Republican leader.

So Joanie, here's a simply priority - have some humility. Conduct yourself in office the way you originally promised the electorate. Lose the chip on your shoulder. Then get to work with EVERYONE in the legislature. These are tough economic times and neither D.C. nor the NYS Legislature will save us.

Really? You missed election day with the amount of crap that's aired on TV and signs littering every major intersection in the county? That Tuesday in the first full week of November passed you by?

But in all fairness - Maffei is AWFUL. Its really a choose and lose situation.

Mr. "Hope and Change" already has one. Remember when he campaigned for office pledging to get rid of these?

Its called "Priorities USA" and it was formed by a former senior adviser, Bill Burton.

John Calipari - "Look kid, you don't have to go to classes while you're here and I promise you'll start! All I need out of you is one year - then you can go get rich in the NBA!"

Duffy is clearly no fool

Nice story but as others have said - this is a reoccurring story and problem.

Why doesn't the county just tell the Corrections Department to hire an additional couple deputies? I don't understand how this is safe to have someone working 16 hours straight working at the jail?

Also, how is it one is working but taking vacation time at the same time to bump his hours? How is this allowed?

Governing this state is such a nightmare. I wish Cuomo would follow up with some of his promises to stand up a little tougher to the unions.

lol - too bad we don't nominate on these forums.

#commentoftheday

The narcotics ada should be fired for getting into a car accident? Really??? Maybe ticketed but fired sounds a bit extreme.

DA makes over $150k a year. Not a pitiful salary unless you're a doctor.

DA and County Executive (who has her own in-house issues) ran unopposed

Agreed. Post Standard needs to stop talking to this clown.

OpIn07 - DeFran would have had to move. His cronies drew the line so he inherits more Republican voters in the suburbs but can continue living in the city. That why when the paper quoted him "it sure looks that way!" - he was likely grinning ear-to-ear.

Ace defense attorney Karen Maris assigned? Poor kid - might as well plea and get it over with.

A sign is an excellent idea. How big is it going to be? $8,000 sounds awfully expensive!

"This election"? Is there a referendum?

Fowler has been far from impressive. Let's be honest.

How is he a liar? You can say a lot of things - but liar isn't one of them.

Well done. Now can we do something about property taxes?

lol - that's great

Thank you for beating me to the punch.

This award has absolutely no credibility to it. Don't forget Jimmy 1-term Carter got one too! I'll quote his wiki page:
"to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development" through The Carter Center."

Peaceful solutions? Letting US nationals rot in Iran for over a year was a solution?

Economic development?!?!? Wasn't the interest rate on a mortgage in the 'teens while he was in office?

Nobel Peace Prize = complete joke
