Firefighters snuff fire in Southeast Portland home equipped with solar panels

The fire started in the first-floor kitchen then spread to the second floor. Firefighters opened up an area of the roof opposite the panels, which were installed based on a new code written for firefighters. That allowed the fire to vent while crews knocked it back.  Full story »

The husband said he wife had been drinking then drove her 16-year-old daughter to go for a horseback ride. He followed her and took her keys. When she came home they got into a physical fight and he hopped into his pickup. But before he could take off, he said she fired multiple rounds at the driver's side. Full story »

Fairview police say man shot by police had attacked officer; his mother says the shooter panicked

Officer Mike Morton, a 15-year-veteran of the department, shot at Larry McKinney three times shortly before midnight Friday, killing him in the doorway of his mother's apartment. His partner, Joe Kaiser, had been attacked by McKinney, according to the statement.  Full story »

Multnomah County DA pursues embezzler for restitution, but many criminals never pay up

Only 9 percent of restitution ordered by Multnomah County judges was paid by offenders whose cases were closed between mid-June and mid-December last year, according to the Department of Corrections. A call came in at 1:14 a.m. from a passing motorist who saw the maroon Ford Explorer parked southbound in the 4400 block of Cordon Road Northeast. Detectives found the man slumped over in the driver's seat. They didn't say how he died, but the case was being investigated as a homicide. Full story »

The Red Tails, an elite group of black pilots, overcame racial barriers to become one of the finest U.S. fighter groups in World War II. Robert Deiz, who grew up in Portland and was a University of Oregon track star, shot down two Nazi planes over Italy.
