Do you think parents and seniors can move forward and have a wonderful graduation?

Kenowa Hills High School seniors in trouble for riding bikes

Kenowa Hills senior who organized controversial bike ride said it was 'not a prank'

Posted on Grand Rapids News on May 22, 2012, 5:05PM

Sixty-five seniors were suspended Tuesday for an unauthorized bike ride that administrators say disrupted school. Full story »

Pennington said she was concerned someone could have gotten hurt. The Walker Public Safety Director said she found out after the fact about the call made by a student to the supervisor on duty. She said they did not have much notice and said they would have liked to have planned the bike route and included more than one cruiser.

ttfn4all, thank you for the feedback. I didn't think I was repeating the previous story but sharing something new regarding the principal's letter and decision to allow an additional senior walk. The Public Safety Director said she would have preferred more than one cruiser but it was short notice.

I am curious what people think about Ms. Pennington's decision to allow another Senior Walk with the entire senior class.

Great feedback on this issue. Does anyone think Principal Pennington was justifified in suspending the students? Some parents suggests having them clean up the school this afternoon, if a punishment had to be given. Should administrators define prank for future seniors?

Senior Prank Day is against the rules. She said seniors were warned not to engage in a such as event. Despite it being a bike ride, the principal is classifying it as a prank. She also said what they did was a safety risk, even though they got a Walker police escort.

Principal Pennington said students were told of the consequences in advance of participating in a prank. She recently notified staff and parents that another senior walk with all seniors will be held on May 30. They still plan to hold the one this afternoon because she said those students not involved in the bike ride should not be penalized.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. Do you think the students should be allowed to come back at the end of the day for the Senior Walk? The experience could be ruined for the seniors who did not participate in the bike ride.

Would you define the bike ride as a senior prank?

darkchyld98, thank you for sharing your bullying experiences and why you believe parents play an important role in helping to curb the problem. There are different approaches being taken around the country and in West Michigan districts to help the problem. I think different things will resonate with different children. Nothing can be one-size-fits-all when it comes to children.

As I am sure you know, gay students are not the only ones that get bullied. Everyone has a right to their own opinion but studies have consistently identified multiple reasons for bullying. Singling out Christian churches does not seem fair. I would like to return to my original question about what is the most effective approach to curbing the problem.

What do you remember about your experience at Central High School?

Do you think this initiative is the right approach to tackling bullying?

Thanks what about us, I was notified earlier about missing Jenison and updated the post. Whrharris that's good insight about the disadvantaged students. U.S. News & World Report did take into account the test scores of disadvantaged students. But your point about City is clear. We only referenced the Kent and Ottawa schools in the top 25 Kent with the link for people to look at all the state rankings.
