We asked columnist Dick Case about your question, here's his reply:
"No one I asked had a sure shot at where the name "skunk city'' came from, although the general agreement says it's years old and likely dates to the time when this part of the city was more farmland than homes and there was a dump. The area did draw skunks and for (some of the neighbors) have memories of summer nights when that "odor: wafted over the neighborhood..."

He was governor from Jan. 1, 1995 to Dec. 31, 2006.
A number of readers have asked about how Reynolds was free after the Pier 57 accident.
We have added an update to the story above where Sheriff Walsh offers an explanation.
You're right.
An advance was planned, but it fell through the cracks due to breaking news.
Right.
We wanted to highlight the story because it is attracting a lot of attention, and to do that we needed a photograph. We're in the hunt for something pertaining to the second accident but have had no success.
We'll substitute the photo as soon as we can.
This just in from the OHA:
A researcher there examined Syracuse City directories and found that Schor's Groceries was at 604 Harrison in 1962 directory, but moved to Fayette Street in 1963. The address on the store in the photo is 604. However, the license plate on the vehicle in front of the store may read 1963 (it also looks like 1965, which is probably where that came from). Given the information from the directories and detailed examination of the photo, it appears the photo is circa 1963.
(I changed the caption above to say "1963." For readers following this thread, it originally had "1965" as the date.)
syracuzn,
Good question. The date in the caption is the one attached to the photo supplied to us by the OHA. We're checking.
The article was posted Monday afternoon by the Tulsa World.
Oh, I don't know bob.

And, no, you couldn't edit the entry on George Washington. It's a protected entry.
Sorry folks. I mistakenly used a link to the early version of the story. The link has been corrected to draw your attention to the most recent story, where more details are available.
The AP style question? Figures are used in ages.
Thanks, gaslight, you were faster on the draw than me.
I added the link and embedded the story.
Point taken.
